Insight Into the Impact Deferred Health Care Costs

After a year of many Americans putting off doctor visits and/or medical treatments, employers could be looking at a large bill. Health care costs are already estimated to increase by 5.3 percent in 2021, and employees and health plan members that are planning to seek treatment for deferred health care could drive employer expenses even higher.1

  • 2 in 5 American are concerned that they may have an undiagnosed health condition2
  • 31% of individuals with a chronic health condition say their health has gotten worse3 
  • 48% of the public say they skipped or postponed medical care4

Employees visited the doctor less, if at all. This likely means missed preventive screenings, skipped chronic care visits and delayed elective procedures. Virtual and telehealth visits attempted to address the gap in health care interactions, and some employers even ramped up wellness outreach. But there was still a significant amount of missed health care opportunities, and the cost impact is still unknown.
